Composer Hanna-Mari Lehtonen wrote Through the Forest for the Arizona State University Composition Competition for Female Composers in 2017, receiving 2nd place. The Winona State University Symphonic Wind Ensemble premiered the work in 2018, under the directorship of Ms. Lehtonen. The piece evokes an ancient and mythical forested landscape. A witch plays a haunting flute melody, cursing a small group of knights to endlessly chase an unknown threat. They travel through different landscapes and villages; their brief moments of respite being constantly interrupted by their chase. Will they ever discover and defeat their elusive enemy? That is for the listener to determine.
