Gone Viral is a musical representation of the pandemic that everyone around the world
experienced beginning in March 2020. Its basic musical material is the “covid-19 rhythm”— two sixteenth notes, an eighth note, and a quarter note—which is the rhythm of the phrase "covid-19." The piece begins as the pandemic began, with a distant rumbling of covid-19. We then hear it in more and more voices until it is everywhere, raging out of control. At its peak, the gong roars while the bass drum and timpani pound out the rhythm in slow motion. Soon it begins to fade, just like the actual virus did. All that remains at the end is the bass drum intoning the rhythm quietly. Then it disappears altogether. A C-major chord rings in the bells: The sun has come out; the pandemic is gone. It is the dawn of a new day. |
