About this Piece
The companion pieces “Off We Go!” and “Lonely Trail” draw upon the spirit of some of my experiences in the Great Plains of eastern New Mexico and western Texas. This region’s grandeur and big skies are captivating, though its isolation adds a somber feeling. While the
remoteness of this land evokes a sense of melancholy, it also can stir a sense of adventure as one confidently confronts its at-times desolate terrain. The opening melody to “Off We Go!” came to me as my young son and I set off on an outing to the New Mexico plains, with our destination close at hand. The piece’s outer parts bubble with energy and the excitement of looking forward to a beautiful day of exploration, while the middle part unfolds more broadly, reflecting the splendor of this wide-open land. |
