Finnish composer Marja Ikonen’s concerto for trumpet and wind band is an excellent example of a piece that involves multiple styles, extended techniques, and improvisation in a beginner-level solo part. A Day at the Lake is in three short sections. The beginning creates “some morning mood, with some foggy feelings and tones,” where the soloist is instructed to improvise on three-note pitch sets. The middle of the piece is a “day mood,” where the piece is more joyful, and the final section of the piece is a festive march.
