About this Piece Stephen Mitton
On the River is based on several river and canyoning trips I have taken over the years in the American Southwest. The rhythm of paddling softly in a canoe, a paddle-board, or even an inflatable raft has always sounded like music to me, and I have tried to capture that feeling in the ostinato patterns that run throughout the piece.
